The United Kingdom Food Standards Agency released the results of a survey it conducted of mineral oil in food and food packaging in the UK. The Agency conducted a risk assessment based on the results and determined that they do not pose a food safety or health risk. The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) regulations permit the use of mineral oil in food and food packaging applications, provided the oil meets established purity specifications.
RPTA developed the “Food Packaging Safety Guidance and Chemical Testing Protocol” (Protocol) to help our members evaluate their products intended for food packaging applications for compliance with the Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act. Please see the information at the links below for additional information regarding RPTA’s Protocol and the mineral oil issue in the European Union.
